Hot Manga Girl (SCRIPT)

Written by Beatrice Yilin Jiang. 26 pages

Beatrice Jiang is a queer filmmaker from Shenzhen, China, devoted to telling stories that are raw, funny, and unafraid. She earned her B.A. in Film & Television Production with a minor in Comedy from the University of Southern California and her MFA in Screenwriting from the American Film Institute Conservatory (Class of 2025).

Beatrice’s work centers on women and queer relationships. She gravitates toward romantic comedies and intimate dramas that explore the awkward, messy, and beautiful ways people try—and fail—to connect. Drawing from her bicultural background, her stories often examine love, shame, and freedom through both Chinese and Western lenses, finding universality in the most specific moments.

Whether she’s writing a heartfelt rom-com or a character-driven drama, Beatrice aims to make audiences feel seen, heard, and less alone. She believes humor is a form of compassion, and that storytelling can hold both truth and joy at once.

Writer Statement

I went to one of the strictest international high schools in Shenzhen—phones banned, dating forbidden—and yet I secretly dated the president of the dance club. That thrill of danger and tenderness—wanting to love but having to hide—became the emotional seed of this story.

I grew up with parents who loved me through criticism, who wanted me to study, not dream—and that shaped both my discipline and my loneliness. Wendy and Odette are two versions of me. Wendy, the girl who tries to fix everything, who believes love must be earned through achievement. Odette, the one who hides, escaping into manga pages because reality hurts too much.

As a queer Chinese woman, I was raised in a culture that teaches you to hide your feelings—to be smaller, quieter, safer. My teenage self would confide, “I wasn’t trying to make trouble; I was trying to feel alive.” Every rule I broke was a way of asking: how much of myself can I keep before the world takes the rest? She was stubborn, dramatic, a little vain—but brave in ways I didn’t recognize back then.

If my show could whisper to a queer teen in China, it would say: You’re not dirty. You’re not broken. You’re just beginning.
