Carmen is a 40 year old woman. Her mother, whom she never had a great relationship with has passed away, but now, through taking care of the home in which she grew up in, she puts herself in her mother’s shoes and finally manages to understand.
Coming to Mother tells the story of a mother and daughter's reunion after years apart. When Qianqian finds herself homeless after being deceived and is about to leave Nanjing, she meets her terminally ill mother at a café. Years ago, her mother fled an unhappy marriage in pursuit of freedom, and though she feels guilty for not being there during her daughter's upbringing, she still hopes Qianqian will be as brave and independent as she once was. She leaves her house to her daughter, encouraging her to take control of her own destiny and avoid repeating the pattern of being trapped. Initially filled with resentment, Qianqian eventually understands her mother's intentions and decides to accompany her to the sea to fulfill her final wish. The story concludes with mother and daughter reconciled—both a redemption of family bonds and a symbol of Qianqian "following" in her mother's footsteps to become a free and strong woman.
