Director Statement

Like women across the globe, Chinese women are undergoing profound transformation. The clash between tradition and modernity reverberates through the minds of successive generations.
The story of <Lady Jasmine >is based on social observations of the current situation of Chinese women. It focuses on the complex and profound relationship between mother and daughter. It portrays the fierce yet tender interdependence unique to East Asian matrilineal relationships—where understanding remains imperfect, yet both women ultimately achieve the revelatory act of seeing one another.
The mother embodies striking contemporary relevance: her youthful passion for dance was stifled first by her father, then her husband. In her twilight years, she dances in live streams on short-video platforms, craving intensely to be seen—even if she ends up being deceived. She is a mother brave enough to live for herself; yet, like mothers of the previous generation, she is both a victim of the patriarchal society and an “oppressor” in her daughter’s life. Torn between self-awareness and traditional notions, she emerges as a rich character who is both detestable and pitiful.
The daughter carries distinct modern feminist consciousness. Though she resents her mother’s intrusions, when witnessing her mother’s humiliation, she consciously breaks the cycle: rejecting inherited patterns of harm, she chooses instead fierce protection and radical acceptance.
This film’s artistic vision springs from an urgent feminine perspective: women deserve to be freer.
