At the end of the 19th century, the Italian Juan Bautista Busca arrived in Zumarraga (Basque Country), along with other Italians, Swiss, and Austrians, to work on the Madrid-Paris railway tunnels. They not only brought their work experience in the construction of Alpine tunnels, but also small diatonic accordions with which they entertained their free time in the barracks where they were housed. Busca was one of them, but he didn't leave after the construction work was completed. He married and settled in Zumarraga, where he started a family, whose descendants still live in the municipality. He planted the seed for a foreign instrument, the accordion, to blend with the ancestral sound of the area's traditional tambourines, giving rise to what we know today as Trikitixa, one of the most representative hallmarks of Basque musical culture. A unique story that represents the enrichment that the arrival of people with different social, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds brings to any culture. The Trikitixa is a recognized Basque musical hallmark both within and outside of Euskal Herria, and curiously, that small accordion came from abroad, and not so long ago. The documentary features more than 20 testimonies, in Basque and Spanish, from important figures in Basque culture, including Bernardo Atxaga, Toti Martínez de Lezea, Kepa Junkera, Fermin Muguruza, Garikoitz Mendizabal, and, of course, members of the still-active Trikitixa de Zumarraga. The documentary features abundant and interesting, rarely seen archival footage, the result of intensive research.

The intention of LUCID was to explore the proliferation of digital media that has cultivated an era where the lines between reality and fiction are increasingly blurred. Though we turn to social media to connect, it ultimately estranges us from ourselves and others and to reality itself. The purpose of LUCID is to allegorically represent this disconnect through the medium of lucid dreaming in order to expose the disintegration of the authentic self within a hypermediated world. My film would be suited to audiences who have a suspicion that the contours of existence extend beyond the dimensions of an iPhone screen, who are painfully aware that we are, in the words of Postman, “amusing ourselves to death.”

Iñaki Pinedo Otaola (Bilbao) Docente y director de Cine documental. Ha sido director de la revista “Trabajadores de la Enseñanza”. Dirige en Cantabria la Muestra de Cortometrajes “Vamos de Cine” y el proyecto del mismo nombre, con el objetivo de integrar el cine como herramienta didáctica en la enseñanza. Forma parte del Colectivo Gelsomina que trabaja para la promoción de la creación audiovisual.
