Mandala
A renowned painter, stripped of his family and eyesight in a tragic accident, retreats to the darkness of his ancestral basement. Struggling with only 10% vision and profound grief, he falls into a void of visual hallucinations where the line between creation and destruction blurs. In a haunting spiral of psychosis, he believes he is reclaiming his late wife, while in reality, he is giving birth to terrifying, obsidian abstractions on canvas.

Director Biography

I am Behnam Khosravi, Writer, Director, Actor, and Ph.D. Scholar in Philosophy.
My artistic identity is forged at the intersection of philosophical inquiry and dramatic storytelling. Born in November 1988, I have spent over a decade exploring existential themes through words, images, and sound. For me, art is not merely a medium of expression but a profound journey into the hidden layers of the human psyche and ethics.
In my 8-year journey as a writer, I have sought to articulate my worldview through my published works, including the self-development novel “Blossoms of the Marsh”, the ethical treatise “The Charter of Human Ethics”, and the narrative collection “Tales of Gharibestan”. My passion for manifesting these concepts led me to directing and acting; with 5 years of experience in directing and 6 years in acting, I have mastered the art of transforming abstract ideas into visual and performative realities.
I view the human voice as a bridge to the audience’s soul. With 6 years of professional voice-over experience in radio and film, I strive to harmonize the resonance of language with artistic intuition. Currently, as a Ph.D. candidate in Philosophy, I am dedicated to synthesizing academic rigor with my creative practice. My goal is to create works—like my recent short film “Mandala”—that transcend simple storytelling to challenge human perception and explore the cognitive boundaries of reality.
Future Vision & Mission: “My vision for the future is centered on forging an unbreakable link between Art, Philosophy, and Cognitive Science to foster global ‘Wisdom’. I believe that contemporary art, more than ever, must transcend mere entertainment and become a tool for elevating consciousness and enhancing human well-being. My mission in future projects is to create works that, by exploring mental and ethical processes, lead the audience to a deeper understanding of themselves and the world. It is a dedicated effort to alleviate human suffering through awareness and to promote sapience through enduring cinematic and literary forms.”
Director Statement
The creation of “Mandala” is an exploration of the intricate intersection between cognitive science and aesthetic manifestation under the weight of trauma. My objective was to cinematically represent the “Top-Down Processing” of the human brain—how the mind, when deprived of external sensory input, overcompensates by projecting internal horrors and memories onto the physical world.
From a cognitive perspective, the film delves into the phenomenon of Visual Hallucinosis. By depicting the protagonist’s transition from realistic mastery to dark, distorted abstraction, I aim to show how the brain reconstructs a “pseudo-reality” to cope with agonizing loss. This film is not merely a story of madness; it is a study of how art becomes the final bridge between a collapsing neural faculty and the desperate need for emotional catharsis. “Mandala” serves as a visual testament to the resilience—and the fragility—of human perception.
