Headphone
This short film focuses on the protagonist, Ruirui, telling the story of her life intertwined with her younger brother and mother—a family in which the father has been absent for an extended period. At the beginning of the story, while watching an animated film, Ruirui returns to her room to retrieve her headphones and happens to overhear her mother angrily reacting to her brother's cut-off nails caused by his grandmother. However, despite facing a similar situation herself, Ruirui's emotions are consistently ignored by her mother. Later, in a moment of desperation, Ruirui takes her brother's headphones, only to be met with an unjustified scolding from her mother. After the argument, her mother flips through an old photo album and suddenly realizes the long-standing neglect she has shown Ruirui. She then prepares breakfast and delivers new headphones to her, hoping to make up for the love that had been overlooked.

I was deeply moved by the vivid portrayal of everyday family life in *Modern Family*—a show that avoids artificially crafting dramatic conflicts, instead seamlessly weaving both family tensions and warmth into the fabric of daily life. I particularly admire this narrative approach, which stays closely rooted in real life by focusing on the subtle, everyday details hidden beneath the surface of ordinary family interactions and capturing the myriad nuanced emotional states within them.
Director Statement
I wrote this story mainly because I also have a younger brother. Since I was a child, the phrase I heard most often was, “Your brother is still young; you should let him have his way.” I know they love me too, and they always do their best to fulfill whatever I ask for; yet, in the small details of our daily interactions, they still unconsciously tend to favor my younger brother.
