Director Biography – Mark Winkler
Mark Winkler is a Canadian-born, New York–based creative director, producer, and advocate with a background in music, theater, education, corporate storytelling, and visual arts. A graduate of the University of Michigan’s Opera Performance program, he later served as Senior Vice President and Creative Director at Jack Morton Worldwide, where his work earned recognition including a Telly Award and a Gold Medal from the New York Film and TV Festival.
He is the co-author of My Art, My World, a book celebrating the art and life of Rita Winkler, and has helped bring Rita’s work to audiences through exhibitions, publishing, video, and public engagement. A More Colorful World: The Art Behind Rita Winkler reflects his commitment to intimate, visually driven storytelling rooted in creativity, dignity, and human connection.
Director Statement
I made A More Colorful World: The Artistry Behind Rita Winkler because I wanted audiences to see Rita not as a symbol, but as an artist.
Rita’s process is unlike the polished, over-explained version of creativity we often expect. Her work begins with color, repetition, instinct, and trust. She does not intellectualize her paintings or describe them in the language of theory. She simply creates. Watching that process closely reveals something deeply human: the need to make, to express, and to leave a mark.

The film, A More Colorful World, demonstrates how Rita’s art is offering the world joy, insight and truthful poignancy. I was moved by Rita’s mother’s voice telling her story. What a profound lesson we get from this mother-daughter relationship! With a mother’s curiosity and patience , wisdom and love she allows Rita’s art to manifest in abundance. We see our world through Rita’s eyes and the clarity of her innocence. Her art moves and is moving. From hand to brush dipping into color and onto paper, creation after creation emerges with artistic integrity, imagination and astounding beauty.
