Director Biography – 魏 刘, Haoyue Li
Liu Wei is an independent documentary filmmaker and producer whose work focuses on agriculture, rural communities, and technological innovation in China. He has contributed to major productions including Harvest China: Food Security for the Nation and Sons of the Earth: China’s Ten Outstanding Pioneers of the Seed Industry.
Since 2012, he has directed a range of documentary series, including Modern Agricultural Facilities, Secrets Behind the Taste, Growing Organic Vegetables through Traditional Chinese Philosophy, Raising the Little Ones, and Rediscovering the Flavour of Guoyourou. To date, he has completed more than 100 documentaries and factual programmes on agriculture and rural development.
His filmmaking is grounded in long-term fieldwork and close observation of everyday life. By focusing on farmers, researchers, and rural communities, he connects personal stories with the transformation of the land and the wider changes taking place in contemporary China. His work combines documentary realism with cinematic storytelling, revealing the human resilience, emotion, and quiet determination behind China’s agricultural and rural development.

When people think of the Loess Plateau, they often imagine a harsh landscape shaped by wind, drought, and generations of hardship. Yet during the making of this film, I discovered another story—one of resilience, innovation, and hope.
This documentary is not simply about mushrooms. It is about the people who believe that science can transform lives. Through the journey of agricultural researcher Huang Chao and the communities he has worked alongside, I wanted to capture how knowledge, perseverance, and trust can reshape both the land and the future of rural families.
