Fun Facts of Movie
Directed by Bongani Baloyi & Botlhale Boikanyo. 9min 16sec
Bongani Baloyi is a South African creative entrepreneur, filmmaker, and director driven by a passion for authentic storytelling and innovative filmmaking. Growing up in Soshanguve, filmmaking once felt like a distant and almost impossible dream. Access to cameras, film equipment, and the world of cinema was limited, and the idea of creating films often felt far removed from the reality of township life. That early experience shaped Bongani’s determination to not only enter the industry but to help redefine what is possible for young African creators.
As the founder of Gigabytes Production, a production company established in 2016, Bongani has built a platform dedicated to producing compelling visual content, documentaries, and digital storytelling that reflects real South African narratives. His work focuses on blending powerful human stories with ambitious visual execution, often pushing creative and technical boundaries to bring new perspectives to African filmmaking.
Bongani is also widely recognised for his work in the creator economy and digital media space. As a speaker on the impact of social media and digital storytelling, he has delivered talks on platforms such as TEDxUniversityofSouthAfrica and TEDxGreshamPlace. In recognition of his influence in the digital space, he was also named one of Humanz Africa’s Top 20 Creators Worth Following for 2026, highlighting his impact in shaping the African creator landscape.
With ALEX SÜD, Bongani aims to merge deeply personal storytelling with bold cinematic techniques. Inspired by the emotional authenticity of films like Tsotsi and the immersive filmmaking style seen in modern global productions, his vision is to create a powerful one-take cinematic experience that showcases the strength of African stories while demonstrating the technical possibilities of modern filmmaking tools.
Director Statement
As Bongani, I want to make this film because growing up in Soshanguve, filmmaking felt like a far-fetched dream something impossible, something reserved for people with access, resources, and environments very different from ours. We were never exposed to film sets, cameras, or the idea that stories from our streets could become cinema. Gear was out of reach, and filmmaking felt like a world we could see but never touch. Today, creating ALEX SÜD is my way of breaking that barrier proving that someone who grew up in Soshanguve can make a world-class film, tell authentic South African stories, and use ambitious techniques like the one-take format to push what’s possible. This film is not just a story; it’s a statement that our backgrounds don’t limit our destiny, and that African filmmakers can create cinema that stands proudly on any global stage.
